Crop Visa Photo: what to know

A visa photo usually needs the head and shoulders centred within a defined frame. Cropping trims the image so the subject fills the right part of the photo.

Face and shoulders, framed

Most visa-photo formats require a front-facing subject, centred, with the head a set size within the frame and the eyes near a consistent vertical line. Cropping removes distracting edges and re-centres the subject.

Automated checks look at where the face sits in the frame. A good crop keeps the head and shoulders visible and plain space around them.

  • Keep the eyes clearly within the upper portion of the frame.
  • Leave a little plain background; do not crop so tight that the head touches the edge.
  • Do not stretch or skew the image; a crop is a crop, not a reshape.
Requirements can vary by embassy, consulate, nationality, application location, or visa route. Check the official instructions before applying.
